£17,324 Raised for Hospital: Workers’ Fund: A Great Record: 8,000 More Members Wanted: …At the annual meeting of the Hitchin and District Workers’ Hospital Fund, held at the Hospital on Wednesday, it was stated that since the Fund was started a total sum of £17,323 16s 9d had been raised for that institution … (discussion) … Poor Response to Special Appeal: Mr. Hill said that although the school children in the area served by the Hospital had made a magnificent response to the Children’s Ward appeal. The response from the general public had not been so satisfactory as had been hoped, and he desired to emphasize that every penny received under that appeal was handed over to the Hospital. The Chairman handed three cheques to Cmdr. Clive Pinsent (chairman of the Hospital Board), and Mr. C. J. Widdows (hon. treasurer) remarking that they were not quite so much as they of the Workers’ Fund would have liked … Mr. C. J. Widdows revealed that the cheques handed to him and Cmdr. Pinsent were for £1,522 11s 4d, being seven-tenths of the income of the Fund … … Cmdr. Pinsent associated himself with what Mr. Widdows had said. The extensions to the Hospital, he said, had been done because it was imperative that they should be done, as was shown by the fact that when they moved into the new children’s ward on Sunday sixteen beds were at one occupied, whereas the old ward contained only eight beds. …

West Sussex Gazette: Friday 14th November 1935

This story was told by Major J. R. Pinsent at the mayoral banquet at Winchester: A somewhat deaf old Alderman expressed surprise at meeting the Town Clerk of his borough in the street. “I thought you were going away,” he said. “Going away?” asked the Town Clerk, “I’ve heard nothing about it “. “The committee decided that you should go away — not been up to the mark — wanted an overhaul,” the Alderman explained: “I voted for it.” And then the Town Clerk saw daylight. “It wasn’t me they were talking about in committee,” he said — “it was the town clock!”
