Birmingham County Court: Yesterday: Before His Honour Judge Chalmers: Professional Etiquette: William Hughes Marklew, designer, 312 Dudley Road, Edgbaston, to recover £50, £35 of which was paid into court. Mr. Vachell appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Hugo Young for the defendant. The case arose out of the attempted sale of some property belonging to the defendant. It was bought by the plaintiff on the condition that he should have the title deeds given him and he paid £35 deposit. The title deeds were not forthcoming, and the plaintiff applied through his solicitor, Mr. Perry for the return of the money. Messrs. Smith, Pinsent, and Co. acting for the defendant sent a crossed cheque to Mr. Perry, made payable to the plaintiff. Mr. Perry considered this a reflection upon him, and the cheque was returned with an application for payment in cash. … … Looking at the correspondence that had taken place, he thought Messrs. Smith, Pinsent and Co. had done everything they possibly could to carry it out. … It seemed to him (the Judge) that the whole thing was a foolish bit of business …

The Fatal Accident at Bishopsteignton: The funeral of the late Mr. John Lake, Radway Farm, Bishopsteignton, who, as already reported, met with his death on Friday afternoon by being thrown violently from a young colt while taking his rounds on the farm, took place in the Bishopsteignton churchyard yesterday afternoon. The deceased was very highly respected in the village and neighbourhood. Mr. Lake was also Quartermaster-Sergeant of the F Troop (Teignmouth) Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry Cavalry, being the oldest member of the Regiment, having joined in 1850. … (attendees included) … T.
