Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Friday 21st December 1877

Northam: A special meeting of the Northam Local Board was held at the usual place of meeting on Saturday, A. B. Wren, Esq., J.P., chairman. There were also present … The chairman opened the meeting by stating that its object was to consider the rescinding of the drainage scheme entered on the minute-book. Captain Sangster said he very much regretted that it fell to his lot to move the resolution, for two reasons, first, he did not think it would be carried out, and there was no doubt that an opposition scheme would be sent to the Local Government Board … secondly, he (Captain Sangster) proposed against his own conviction. ….  (discussion of old issues leading to a resolution) …. “That all resolutions bearing on the scheme for the drainage outfall at Westward Ho! to the westward be rescinded, and that Mr. Ellis’s scheme No. 2, for carrying the drainage to the Pimpley, with a view to its discharge into the existing dyke, be adopted; and that the Local Government Board be informed thereof.” The resolution was carried. Mr. Williams remarked that the Local Board had been threatened with an action by Mr. Pynsent therefore they must be prepared. …

Testimonial to Mr. J. Pynsent Mathew: Master of the Talaton Harriers: This popular sportsman was on Thursday evening last week presented at the Dolphin Hotel, Honiton with a gratifying and well a merited token of regard. And so appropriate a compliment must have been greatly enhanced by the person attendance of neighbours, friends and brother sportsmen from all points of his county, anxious to show the esteem he had commanded during the long period (considerably over twenty years) that he had provided sport, and maintained not only his excellent pack but the honoured position of master of the Talaton Harriers, in a manner which had given satisfaction the entire agricultural community …. (description of event) …Sir John continued: it is now my pleasing duty to ask Mr. Pynsent Mathews acceptance of this noble gift, in the names of all who are present, and of those few upon this list who are unfortunately absent, and to offer it in the words of the following inscription engrave upon the chaste and elegant silver kettle now before me: “Presented with a tea and coffee service to J. Pynsent Mathew, Esq., of Rydon, Talaton, Devon, the 1st day of November 1877, on the occasion of a dinner (presided over by Sir J. H. Kennaway, Bart. M.P.) – given to Mr. Pynsent Mathew by the followers of his hounds, as a sincere token of the respect and esteem in which he is held by his neighbours and friends …. (other speeches) …Mr. F. L. Ellis proposed the healths of Mrs. Pynsent Mathew and family, and with a few other sentiments, some capital songs and five old bachelors returning thanks seriatim, for the ladies, this very successful “Meet” was brought to a close.

Honiton: … Hunt Dinner: The friends of J. Pynsent-Mathew, Esq., of Rydon House, Talaton, met at the Dolphin Hotel on Thursday last for the purpose of dining together and also to present Mr. Mathew with testimonial in token of their regard for him, having for several years past provided them with pack hounds for the purpose of hunting the neighbourhood. About seventy sat down to the dinner, which was of the most recherche description and provided by Host Banfield, and among those present were Sir John H. Kennaway, Bart, (who presided), W. Hine Haycock, Esq. (vice chair), Colonel Drewe, E. Drewe, Esq., the Rev. J. G. Copleston, Rev. G. T. M. Messiter, G. P. Blake, Esq., &c., &c. After the usual loyal toasts had been duly honoured, Sir John Kennaway made the presentation, consisting of a handsome silver tea and coffee service valued about 150 guineas. Mr. Mathew suitably acknowledged the receipt of the testimonial, and a pleasant evening was afterwards spent. …
