Westward Ho! The Railway and Pier: Two undertaking that will play a prominent part in the development and progress of this latest of fashionable watering-places were “inaugurated” on Thursday. The first was the cutting of the premier sod of the Bideford, Appledore and Westward Ho! Railway, and the second the nailing of the central plank of the Pier … Less than half a dozen years ago, Northam Burrows, as the place was then called, – it not having been as yet christened with the pretty and romantic name of Westward Ho! in compliment to Charles Kingsley was devoted principally to geese and donkeys, whilst occasionally a pic-nic party, or a stray tourist, come to take a peep at the wonderful pebble ridge, would put in an appearance … It will be entirely independent of the London and southwester Railway Company being made by a Company of which Captain Molesworth is the chairman. It will run through lands of Mr. W. Yeo, Mr. W. Molesworth, the trustees of Mr. Pynsent, Lieut. Col. Hutchinson, and Gen. Hutchinson, all of whom have liberally given their land to the company free of cost. …

Northam: Local Government Board: The fortnightly meeting of this Board was held at Northam on Saturday last, the Rev. I. H. Gosset chairman: … (discussion of Silford Road widening) … Mr. Yeo then proposed, and Mr. Gosset seconded, that the report be adopted, and the improvements be carried out at a cost not exceeding L.150: Mr. Pynsent moved as an amendment, and it was seconded by Mr. Burnecle, “That the consideration of the Silford road improvement be deferred, until the five widenings and improvements already sanctioned by the Board at a cost of L.1,850 have been carried out, and the total expenditure there on ascertained.” The amendment was put to the meeting and was lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it.

Northam Local Board: The fortnightly meeting of this board was held in the Vestry room on Saturday, present — the Rev. I. H. Gosset (Chairman), and Messrs. Reynolds, Pynsent, Yeo, W. Pickard, Tucker, Darracott, Cook, Mill, H. Pickard, Gordon, Bassett. Evans, Kelly, and Hutchinson. Mr. Beer, of Pimpley, was elected member in the place of Mr. Heathcote, resigned. The Chairman reported that several cases of fever bad broken out at Applcdore, and a committee was appointed to inquire into state of the water supply in that locality and expend a sum not exceeding £5 in improvements to the water supply on the beach at West Appledore. … (continues) …

Westward Ho! Bideford, Appledore and Westward Ho! Railway: At the meeting of the landowners interested in the Bideford, Appledore and Westward Ho! Railway, at the Royal Hotel, on Wednesday, to which we have referred elsewhere, the plans of the proposed line were produced. The landowners present were General Hutchinson, Mr. Yeo, Mr. Pynsent, Mr. Cox .. etc. … After an explanation had been given on the part of the company the landowners present generally approved of the entire scheme, and gave their consent to the improved gradients and curves as shown in the plans expressing their intention of doing all they could to promote the undertaking …  the line will have stations at Bideford, Cliff House, Bidna Knapp (for Northam), Burrows Road (for Northam), Westward Ho! and Appledore …

The Bishop of Exeter on Church of England Home Missions: A second meeting in advocacy of the claims of the Additional Curate’s Society was held on Friday afternoon last, in the Bath Saloon, which was presided over by the Bishop of Exeter. Devonian Schools (1869): … (letter listing establishments) … In “Carlisle’s Grammar Schools,” vol. 1, A.S. 1818, these in Devon were described: viz. Ashburton, Chudleigh, Crediton, Exeter, Honiton, Saint Mary, Ottery, Plymouth, Plympton, Tiverton, and Totnes. Chudleigh School, founded by John Pynsent, 1668, is now a boarding school with an endowment of £30 per annum on an estate at Combe, near Croydon. The donor’s executors did not carry his will into effect, as he ordered three Cambridge scholarships to be founded and the endowment was secured by application the Court of Chancery. Northam: Local Government Board: Saturday: The Rev. E. Reynolds presiding: Messrs. White and Cutler attended the meeting an explained the scheme of the proposed Gas Works for Appledore, Northam and Westward Ho! … Mr. Yeo proposed the motion of which he had given notice respecting the division of Westward Ho! from the other portion of the district, for certain purposes in connection with the drainage, and it was unanimously agreed to. Mr. Risdon, surveyor, was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of widening the Upper Road, near Mr. Pynsent’s house, to Westward Ho! and that the Clerk prepare a petition for the sum requisite ….

Westward Ho! Drainage Question: Mr. R. Morgan the Inspector from the Home Office held a second inquiry at Westward Ho! on Friday, with reference to the proposed enclosure of the Burrows for irrigation purposes. A numerously signed petition against the Burrows being interfered with, was presented by Mr. Lionel Bencraft, solicitor, of Barnstable, on behalf of the ratepayers of the parish of Northam … (discussion: only four out of seventeen members of the Local Board support enclosure) … The Rev. I. H. Gosset recommended that tanks should be put on the Burrows, and that a dike should be cut from Goosey Pool to floodgate, so as to carry the water to sea. The water would then be perfectly innoxious. Mr. Pynsent was in favour of this proposal, as the tanks were not enclosures. …
