(To the Editor of the Western Times) SCRIPTURE READING SOCIETY FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF NEWTON ABBOT: In consequence of the sudden removal by death, of Mr. Legier, the esteemed and laborious agent of the above Society, who for nearly nine years has done the work of an Evangelist, with much earnestness and success; the Committee feel called upon to make an appeal to his friends and the benevolent, on behalf of his bereaved widow and five fatherless children, who are left almost destitute of the means of support. Subscriptions will be gratefully received by the subjoined gentlemen, or at the Devon and Cornwall Bank, Newton Abbot, and the proceeds will be securely invested by the Committee for the future advantage of the Family: THOS. The Southampton Club: the members of the Southampton Club held their annual dinner at the clubroom, High Street, on Thursday evening, when about fifty gentlemen sat down to an excellent repast provided by Mr. Brixley, who sustained his reputation of being a first-class public caterer. In the absence of the president (Mr. C. E. Deacon), Mr. J. C. Sharp, the vice-president, occupied the chair … (speeches and toasts) … Mr. Pinsent gave “The health of the Chairman, Mr. J. C. The show yard was in a field at the end of East Street, and the ploughing took place in a field on Buckland Barton, some distance from the town, in the occupation of Mr. Walter Rendell … (description of event) … The Dinner was supplied by Mrs. Beazley, at the Globe Hotel l and her catering gave satisfaction to about 120 guests. Newton Agricultural and Labourers’ Friend Society: Annual Meeting: Yesterday: This old-established association, whose efforts to promote the agricultural interests of the county, have for the past quarter of a century met with most encouraging evidence of success, held its annual meeting yesterday (Thursday). The proceedings in every respect passed satisfactorily. The ploughing match took place in a field at Buckland Barton, in the occupation of Mr. Walter Rendell.
