John Robert Pinson was the youngest son of Thomas Henry Pinson by his wife Matilda Jane (née Booth). He was born in Canterbury, a suburb of Sydney and grew up there with two brothers and two sisters. Their father ran a butcher’s shop on “Taylor Street” in Lakemba. The Electoral rolls show that John joined his father and a brother in the butchery business when he came of-age. He married Edna May Chignell in Canterbury in 1936 and they lived on “Haldon Street” in 1936 and “Dennis Street” in Lakemba in 1937.
John Robert and Edna May had at least two sons and a daughter. However the elder of their sons died while still young. According to the Electoral Roll, John was still a “butcher,” but he had moved to “Avoca Street” in the Randwick South district by 1943. It was to be the family home throughout the 1940s and 1950s. John and Edna’s daughter came of age and was a “secretary” living with them in 1963. However, she moved on, presumable to get married and it was their son (who was also a “butcher”) who was living with them in 1968. However, he had married and moved out by 1972.
The Rolls make no mention of Edna in 1972; so perhaps she had died by then. Nevertheless, John was still reported to be a “butcher” living on “Avoca Street” – now described as being in the suburb of Kingsford. His son and daughter-in-law had moved in next door by 1977. Perhaps the former was taking over the business. He would have been the fourth generation of “butcher” in the family. Presumably they had learnt a thing or two by then. John was still around in 1980 but he retired to Matraville on the Southeast side of Botany Bay and died there in August 1989 (Australia and New Zealand Find A Grave Index).
