Roger Pinsent was the younger of his father Roger Pinsent’s two surviving sons by Elizabeth (née Symons). He was the second to bear the name as an earlier Roger Pinsent had been short-lived. He had been born in 1690 and died in 1701. Roger Pinsent “senior” seems to have been a “weaver” and a “labourer” who lived at “Higher Yeo” in Wreyland Manor, in the parish of Bovey Tracey (Cecil Torr: Wreyland Documents: 1910).
Roger Pinsent “junior” and his brother Edmond had an elder brother John Pinsent. However, the parish records are incomplete and they only rarely mention family affiliation so it is hard to sort out “who was who.” I do not know what happened to him but I suspect he died young. They may also have had a sister Elizabeth Pinsent, but registers are not particularly clear on this point either. Roger and Edmond started out as “labourers” but they probably became small-time “tenant farmers”. Edmond’s life is discussed elsewhere.
Roger Pinsent “junior” married Anne Edwards in Bovey Tracey in 1724 – four years after his father died – and had at least two sons, another Roger Pinsent in 1725 (whose life is discussed elsewhere) and a John Pinsent who was born 1729 and likely died in 1734. Again, it is hard to be sure. Roger and Anne seem to have stayed on in Bovey Tracey as the Land Tax records show that they and their son Roger were a tenant farmers living on “part of Yeo” in 1780.
Roger Pinsent seems to have died in Bovey Tracey in 1783. He would have been eighty years old by then, so it was probably his son Roger (the third of that name) who actually payed the land tax on the “part of Yeo” they controlled. I do not know when Anne (née Edwards) died.
