Joseph William Pynsent was the second eldest son of Alfred Francis Pynsent by Elsie Florence Jefferies. He was the second of three “Joseph William Pynsents” to be born into this branch of the family He born in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1922 and grew up there and in Belmore (a suburb near Canterbury to the southeast) with three brothers and three sisters. His father was “carter” who had seen service with the Australian Army on the Western Front in the First World War – and delighted in the nickname of “Major” (Sidney Morning Herald: 26th November 1960).

One of Joseph’s brothers died young; however his other siblings married, and their offspring are probably still to be found in New South Wales. Joseph William Pynsent joined the Australian Army during the Second World War and we find that “Dvr. Joe Pynsent (A.I.F.)” became engaged to “Marg” (Marjorie Harriett), the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Wall, of Belmore in November 1944 (Sydney Morning Herald: Saturday 25th November 1944). Joseph seems to have been stationed near Townsville in Queensland towards the end of the war, as he evidently played football there for an army team in 1945 (Townsville Daily Bulletin: Saturday 9th June 1945).

The Electoral Rolls tell us that Joseph William became a wharf or dockside “labourer” after the war. He had three sons by Marjorie and he settled in Bankstown North, near Sydney in the early 1950s. The family lived on Ritchie Street in Yagoona, Bankstown North, near Sydney, from 1954 to at least 1980. Joseph Pynsent “late of Yagoona” died in July 1992 (Sydney Morning Herald: 18th July 1992). Marjorie Harriett Pynsent, his widow, died in August 2012 (Sydney Morning Herald: 20th August 2012). Their sons probably continue the family line.
