Frank Pinsent was the fourth and youngest son of Thomas Pinsent by his wife Lily Gertrude (née Elliott). He was born in Nottingham in 1926 and grew up there. He was a teenage schoolboy living with his parents on Oxclose Lane when the Register was compiled (in 1939) at the start of the Second World War. Frank seems to have left school as soon as he was able to and joined the Merchant Navy. He served towards the end of the war and was, therefore, eligible for a medal in recognition (WWII Medals Issued to Merchant Seamen, 1939-1945). Frank was still in the merchant navy in 1946. He was a “mess room steward” when brought up in front of the Tynemouth Magistrates on a charge of being drunk and disorderly in Bedford Street, North Shields. One of his friends had kicked in a window. Frank was fined 20s (Shields Daily News: Monday 7th January 1946). Presumably his friend paid for the repair of the window.

Frank went to work in a hosiery factory on leaving the navy. He married Wife (GRO1507), a “packer” at a brass foundry in 1949 and they had seven children (five boys and two girls), including as the youngest a pair of (non-identical) twins.

Their eldest son, Christopher Dennis Pinsent was born in 1950. He served with the British Army of the Rhine (B.O.A.R.) in Germany in the 1970s and married Wife (GRO1584) while he was there, in 1974. They had two children, a son who was born in England in 1974 and a daughter who arrived while they were in Germany in 1976.

Christopher Dennis’s marriage may have failed as seems to have been living by himself in Waterbeach, in Cambridgeshire in 1982 (British Telephone Directories). He married again in 1990. Christopher died in July 2015.

Christopher Dennis had been predeceased by two of his brothers, Frank John and Robert Ian Pinsent. Frank John Pinsent – Frank’s second son was born in Nottingham in 1951. He married in 1975 and died two years later, shortly before his 33rd birthday. His family and his widow placed memorials notices in the local newspaper acknowledging his passing and the birthdays he had missed (Nottingham Evening Post: Thursday 3rd May 1977). He had no time to start a family.

Frank’s fourth son, Robert Ian Pinsent was born in Nottingham in 1954 and seems to have stayed on there. He married Wife (GRO1510) in 1975 but they do not seem to have had a family of their own. The marriage may not have lasted, as Wife (GRO1510) may have remarried in 1986. Robert Ian died in Nottingham in 1993 Nottingham Evening News: Monday 19th April 1993).

Frank’s friends and relations threw a surprise party for him when he was 65, perhaps it was a retirement party. He was suitably appreciative and he inserted a notice of thanks in the local paper (Nottingham Evening Post: 15th October 1991). He died in Nottingham in April 2001.
