Devon Quarter Sessions: Today: The criminal business of these sessions commenced at ten o’clock this morning. The Bench was composed of Mr. W. H. Halliday (Chairman), Sir John Phear, Mr. W. Matthews, and Mr. U. N. Symington. The following were impaneled as The Grand Jury: W. B. Swell (foreman), H. Acland, W. H. Barons, G. J. Boad, T. Bodley, J. W. B. Collis, W. Cray, W. G. Davies, W. H. Fiddias; C. S. Gunning, H. Hookings, G. Huggins W. Huxtable, J. Leach, M. Nicks, James Vag, G. Perkins, H. Pinsent, J. B. Smith, W. Surridge, G. Thorne, C. Turner, C. W. Wills. A few minutes after the Grand July had retired, information was brought into court that one of their number (Gunning) had been seized with a sudden illness and Samuel Tickwell thereupon volunteered to serve in his stead: … the Charge … (discussion of upcoming session continues) …
