Newton Abbot: District Council: At a meeting of the Urban District Council on Monday it was decided to make a general district rate of 1s 2d in the £ for the ensuing half-year. The Highweek Parish Council wrote stating that Messrs. W. S. Pinsent, A. B. Segar, J. Wright, and C. J. Vicary had been appointed as committee to confer with the Urban Council with respect to the proposed provision of a bathing place. After a discussion Messrs. Parker, Stevens, Segar, and Prowse were appointed to meet the deputation. The Jubilee: The final meeting of the Wolborough and Highweek Jubilee Joint Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. W. S. Pinsent presiding. The Entertainment Committee reported that the £125 voted for them was more than enough to carry out the programme. A vote of thanks was accorded to the ladies for their untiring efforts and to Miss Hickey for providing entertainment. The Procession Committee’s report was also highly satisfactory. The Juvenile sports Committee reported that the total number of entries amounted to 1,950. The £231 received from the day’s celebration was just sufficient to cover the expenses. For the hospital, Newton subscribed £896 and the outlying parishes £30, and the total £929, less £14 for printing etc. was ordered to be paid to the treasurer of the Cottage Hospital. The jubilee decorations were presented to the Reception Committee of the Devon Agricultural Society for their meeting next year. Vote of thanks to Mr. W. S. Pinsent (chairman of the Joint Committee), Mr. L. Bearne, C.C. (Chairman of the public meeting when it was decided to support the hospital scheme) and to the Hon. Secretaries (Messrs. W. H. Jarvis and Charles Pope, closed the proceedings.
