Exeter and Plymouth Gazette: Wednesday 7th October 1903

Newton Petty Sessions: Sidney Batten, Samuel Powesland, and William Pinsent, young men, were summoned for trespassing in search of conies on land at Ilsington in the occupation of Mr. Washington M. Singer on September 12th. Mr. Eastley appeared for the prosecution. Samuel Courtier, gamekeeper, proved seeing defendants using ferrets and nets. On the witness appearing, they ran away, but he chased them on horseback, and caught Pinsent, who became very abusive, and threatened to break the witness’s neck. The other two defendants “gave in” quietly. On being searched rabbit nets and a ferret were found on the defendants. Powesland said he only came from Dorset the previous day and joined Pinsent and Batten in search for a ferret, which they had lost. The Bench fined Pinsent 30s inclusive, and Batten 15s inclusive. Powesland was ordered to pay the costs, 3s 6d.
