Deepening of Newton Stream: The question of the deepening of the river Lemon opposite Stockman’s Mills was the subject of discussion at a special meeting yesterday of Newton Urban Council. The matter was introduced at a recent inquiry held by Colonel Slacke in connection with the enclosing of the Markets. The Market Committee recommended that plans should be carried out. Messrs. Martin and Hearder thought it undesirable to do this until an expert had been called in to advise them as to what the effect would be. Mr. Judd, in moving the adoption of the report, pointed out that the plans had been before the Inspector and approved by the Local Government Board. Mr. Holman seconded, and the report was adopted. The Council decided to affix their seal at the next meeting to the Local Government Board respecting the purchase of lands of Mrs. Cox and Mr. Pinsent.
