Wilfred was the third son of Walter Pinsent by his wife, Clara (née Black). He was born in Leicester where his father was a “shoe finisher” who lived on Western Road (1901 Census). His parents took over a grocer’s shop and off-license on Martin Street in 1909, and so that was where Wilfred and his siblings (Charles William Pinsent,  Arthur Ernest Pinsent, and Hilda May Pinsent) spent their youth.

Wilfred followed his father into the shoe trade when he left school and became a “shoe clicker.” At the time of the census in 1921, he was employed by “Fox and Co.” However, he was later to become a “shopkeeper”. In fact, he may have been the (relatively junior) “shop keeper” found to be living at #2 All Saint’s Place in Leicester in 1925 (Kelly’s Directory). He took over his parent’s business on Martin Street around 1928 (Kelly’s Directory).

Wilfred married Louie Irene Bassford (a “shoe-machinist”) in 1922. They had eight children (six sons and two daughters) in the years that followed. Of these, all but three (George Pinsent, John Walter Pinsent and their sister Elaine Irene Pinsent , who was born in 1939) lived to adulthood and married.

The War-time Register shows that Wilfred and Louie ran an “Off-license and Grocery ” on Martin Street in 1939 and their sons, Charles William Pinsent – who was training to be an “engineering estimator,” Bernard Pinsent – an “apprentice templater,” and Neville Pinsent and Brian Pinsent – who were still “schoolboys” were still living with them. There was another child present; however, his or her name has been redacted. None of their children would have been married by then.

Their four sons married in the 1940s and 1950s and their lives are described elsewhere. They had children of their own who bring the family line through into modern times. Wilfred died in Leicester (England and Wales Burial Index: Ancestry.com) in 1970 and his widow, Louie Irene, died there in January 1985. Her children placed an “in memoriam” notice in the Leicester Daily Mercury the following year (29th January 1986).

Walter was the only son of Ernest Arthur Pinsent by his wife Florence Deacon. He was born on Ridley Street, in Leicester, in 1897. His father died in 1902 and he probably grew up alongside the rest of his father’s family on Western Road until his mother married George Arthur Gray, in Wigston Magna in Leicestershire, in 1907.

Walter joined the army in 1912 – before the “First World War”. He started out as a “driver” with the “Royal Field Artillery” (No. 398) but later transferred to the “Lancashire Fusiliers” (No. 236016). Walter saw active service overseas during the war and he was eligible for the “British”, “Victory” and “Star” medals when discharged in February 1919.

Walter may have found it difficult to adapt to civilian life. He, and eight of his friends, were fined by the Magistrates for gambling after being caught playing “Banker” – an illegal card game – in a field outside Shepshed in 1920 (Leicester Daily Post: Thursday 14th October 1920). He was also one of two “labourers” fined for breaking into the local drill hall and helping themselves to a few beers (Leicester Daily Mercury: Wednesday 28th November 1923).

Walter left the army as an “engineer’s fitter,” which was his trade when he married Mabel Annie Wright, the daughter of a “coal merchant” in Shepshed in 1919. She ran a drapery  (Kelly’s Directory, 1915) and he seems to have joined her in running it. According to the 1921 census, he was a “dealer in drapery” and she was a “dressmaker” and they were both “working on their own account.” Walter was said to be a “master draper” when their son, also called Walter, was born in Hall Croft, Shepshed that same year. Sadly, he died within a few days of birth. He had no other children that I am aware of; however, he stole a pair of boy’s boots anyway, in October 1929. In court, he claimed it was “an impulse of the moment” (Leicester Daily Mercury: Wednesday 2nd October 1929). Walter’s wife, Mabel died in Loughborough in 1931.

Walter moved to London, where he became a “driver” for a haulage contractor. He married a “restaurant waitress,” Doris Osborne, in Southwark Registry Office, in 1934. They had no children.

Walter was an “incapacitated married patient” living in a Convalescent Home in Brighton, Sussex when the Wartime Register was compiled in 1939.  It is not clear what his wife, Doris Pinsent, was up to at the time! Although there are some redacted names and she may have been among them. Walter became a “lift attendant” at “Paddington Hospital” towards the end of his life. He died in March 1947 leaving effects, valued at £103, that passed to his widow, Doris (England and Wales National Probate Calendar: 1858-1966). She most likely died in Surrey in 1986.

Walter was the second eldest son of Charles Pinsent by his wife, Susannah (née Bagshaw). He was born in Leicester and grew up with four sisters (Elizabeth, Annie, Harriet and Florence Pinsent) and two brothers (George Henry Pinsent and Ernest Alfred Pinsent) in St. Mary’s parish. Walter left school around the time his father died, in 1882, and he was reported to be a “boot heeler” living with his widowed mother and younger siblings on Ridley Street at the time of the Census in 1891.

Walter married Clara Black, the daughter of a “frame-work knitter” by banns in St. Mark’s parish church in Leicester two years later. His brother George Henry Pinsent was a witness. Walter and Clara lived on Harrington Street, in Leicester and they had their first three children (Elizabeth Clarice, Charles William and Arthur Ernest Pinsent) while they were there. Sadly, their first-born died young. Walter and Clara had moved to the Western Road with their other children by the time the 1901 census takers came around. Walter was a “shoe-finisher” and Clara ran a, home-based, grocery shop “on her own account”. She had two more children (Wilfred and Hilda May Pinsent) while she ran the shop in the early 1900s.

The family had moved to Martin Street by 1909 (Leicester Electoral Register) and that is where the census takers found them in 1911. Walter was still, nominally, a “shoe hand finisher” but Kelly’s Directories suggests that he was also working with his wife out of their home on Martin Street. They were described as “shopkeepers and beer retailers,” – so they also operated as an off-license.

Walter and Clara were still running the business in 1921 when that year’s census was compiled. Nevertheless, he described himself as being an “out of work shoe hand & finisher employed by Mr. Thornton Boot & Shoe Manufacturer of Yeoman’s Lane.” His wife said that she worked at home. Their sons Arthur Earnest Pinsent and Wilfred were said to be “shoe clickers” currently in the employ of the “Brandon Shoe Company of Brandon Street,” and “Fox and Co. of Occupation Road” respectively. Their daughter Hilda May, meanwhile, worked for “Robinson & Pickford Hosiery Manufacturers of Watling Street” as a “hosiery mender.” They lived on Martin Street but there is no mention of the shop or off-license.

Wilfred appears to have been a “shopkeeper” in All Saints Place, Leicester in 1925; however he had taken over his parents retail operation by 1928 (Kelly’s Directories, 1925 & 1928). Presumably Walter’s daughter Hilda May Pinsent helped out in the shop – at least until she married a “butcher” in 1931. Walter and Clara were reported to be “grocers and fruiterers” on Grasmere Street in Leicester in 1927 (British Telephone Books: 1880 – 1984: Ancestry.com); however they had moved to Forest Road by 1930 (Leicester Electoral Registers).

Walter and Clara were, quite understandably, retired when the war-time Register was compiled in 1939. They were living on Stafford Street. Clara died there in December 1949. Probate was granted to her daughter, Hilda May Ridout (née Pinsent). Her effects were valued at £3,671 (England and Wales, National Probate Calendar: 1858-1966: Ancestry.com). Her husband Walter and her children posted an “In Memoriam” notice in the Leicester Daily Mercury a year after her death (Thursday 21st December 1950). Walter died at his daughter’s residence in December later that same year. At the time, he was described as being a “retired beer retailer”. Interestingly, the “In Memoriam” notice refers to a Jim Pinsent along with Hilda and Clarice. Perhaps his son had been baptized as Wilfred James.

Walter’s eldest son, Charles William Pinsent had been a “shoe clicker” living with his parents on Martin Street at the time of the 1911 census. He served as a private in the “Yorkshire and Lancashire Regiment” during the First World War and survived. However, he seems to have succumbed influenza in November 1918. Presumably he was an unfortunate early victim of the post-war pandemic. Walter’s two other sons both married and had children. Their lives are described elsewhere.
