William Mitchelmore was the only son of William Pinsent by his wife Susanna Rebecca (née Harvey). His father was a “master mariner” from Teignmouth in England who settled in St. John’s Newfoundland and married in 1867. They had five children; however, only one of them was a son. He was baptized in St. Thomas’s Church in St. John’s in April 1872.
William and his sisters grew up in St. John’s and the family probably lived there until William died (?) in the 1880s. They then moved down to Swampscott, in Essex County, Massachusetts. They were there by 1887. Why they moved, and why there, I do not know.
All but one of Susanna’s children married. Maud Harvey Pinsent, died in Lynn in Essex County in January 1892 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery (U.S. Findagrave Index 1600s-current). The index includes a list of her next of kin, among whom are mentioned her mother Susanna Rebecca Pinsent and her siblings, Idissa Melissa (Pinsent) Strong, Mary Elizabeth (Pinsent) Shambler; William Mitchollmore Pinsent and Susan (Pinsent). Why the name “Mitchelmore” was changed to “Mitchollmore” I do not know. William was baptized using the usual Devonshire spelling.
William Mitchollmore took out U.S. Citizenship while living at 16 Cedar Street in Lynn in Massachusetts, and he collected his papers at the Lynn Police Centre in 1902 (Index to New England Naturalization Petitions, 1791-1906: Findmypast). He married Grace E. Hibbertwas in Swampscott in Massachusetts three years later. She was from Boston (Index to Marriages in Massachusetts (1901 – 1905)).
William was a “hardware salesman” who lived with his wife and, by the time of the 1910 U.S. Federal census, their two year old son on Hampden Street in Swampscott Town. Sadly, Warren Hibbert Pinsent died and was buried in the Hibbert-Pinsent family plot in Swampscott Cemetery in 1916. He was eight years old. His grandmother (William’s mother Susanna Rebecca Pinsent) died and joined him the year following. She had been living nearby with her youngest daughter, Susan Nichols (nee Pinsent). Interestingly, Susanna may have retained an interest in the family’s home in St. John’s Newfoundland as the local papers tell us that the house was badly damaged in a fire in 1917. The house was said to have been owed by a Mrs. Harvey. The contents were not insured.
The 1920 U.S. Federal census shows that William Mitchelmore was a “hardware dealer” and that he and Grace were still living on Hampden Street. They were still there in 1940, twenty years later. By then, William was reported to be the owner of a “hardware store”.
William Mitchelmore Pinsent died in 1953 and he joined the rest of his family in the family plot in Swampscott Cemetery. His wife Grace (née Hibbert) followed in 1963. There is a photograph of the burial marker on billiongraves.com. This male Pinsent line died out with William. However, his sisters probably contributed to the local gene pool.
