William James Pinson was the fourth son of Archibald Frederick Pinson by his first wife, Rosanna, (née Pettit). He was born into a family of ten children (6 boys and 4 girls) who arrived over a period of twenty-three years between 1888 and 1909. One of William’s brothers, Stanley Roy Pinson, died young but his other siblings all grew up and most had married and left home by the time their parent’s marriage ended in divorce in 1928. Their father, who was a “butcher” married Ellen Storm in Newtown in Sydney the following year. They had no children that I am aware of.

William James and his older brother Archibald Frederick Pinson “junior” both worked with their father, learnt the trade and became “butchers” in their own right. They were the third generation of Pinsons to go into the business. William James married Eva May Barrett, the daughter of a fellow “butcher” from nearby Annandale, in “St. Thomas’s Anglican Church” in Rozelle (Balmain) in May 1914. Eva was under-age at the time, but her father gave his written consent to the marriage (Sydney Australian Anglican Parish Registers: 1814-2011: Ancestry.com). They promptly started a family that eventually comprised three sons and (probably) a daughter.

In November 1918, William enlisted in the “Australian Army”. His attestation papers show that he was 5 ft. 5 in. tall; he weighed in at 126 lbs. and his chest measured 36 in. He had a fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair and distinctive moles on his back and on the top of his right arm. Somehow or other, he had also managed to acquire scars below both his knees. He was considered fit for service and was enlisted as Private William James Pinson, #96550. He joined too late to actually serve. In fact, the “First World War” ended just a few days after he enlisted! He was, predictably, discharged at end of December 1918 and he went back to being a “butcher”.

William James, Eva May and their family settled in “Heath Street” in Concord, Sydney. The Electoral Rolls show that they were there from 1930 until at least 1937. They also show that William’s mother Rosanna (or Rose Ana as it was sometimes given) and his sister Doris Violet Marjorie Pinson had moved in next-door to him by 1935. At least that part of the family seems to have stayed on speaking terms!

William James’s eldest son, William James “junior” had left home by 1937; however, he had not gone far. The Electoral Rolls show that he lived on “Stamford Avenue” in Concord – which was close to his parents throughout the 1940s. His brother Rossiter Barrett Pinson was a “labourer” who joined the “Australian Imperial Force” (#NX500586) during the “Second World War”. What happened to him afterwards, I am not sure. However, he was living with his parents on “Heath Street” in 1954 and 1958. He died in 1960. I am not aware that he ever married or had children.

William James and Eva May’s third son, Keith Stanley Pinson and their daughter (?) “Madge” Pinson, who had both probably fairly recently come of age, were living with them on “Heath Street” in 1949. Keith was a “fitter” who – presumably – assembled machinery and “Madge” was a “comptometerist” (someone who operated a mechanical calculator). “Madge” could, I suppose, have been married to one or other of the boys. They had left the family home by 1954. Keith drops out of sight until 1980, when he reappears in Murray-Pond, Bennelong living on “Downes Street” with Yvonne Marguerita Pinson. I am not sure of the relationship.

William James Pinson “senior” and his mother, Rosanna, probably both died between 1958 and 1963. Unfortunately, I have yet to find the records. The Electoral rolls show that William James’s wife/widow Eva May was living on her own on “Collingwood Avenue”, near to where her eldest son, William James Pinson “junior,” and his wife Hazel (second name unknown) and their family in 1963. She was still there until 1977 – or perhaps later. She would have been in her eighties when she died in Sydney in September 1981 (Sydney Morning Herald: 29th September 1981).

This branch of the Pinson family is poorly defined but Eva May’s eldest son, William James Pinson “junior” certainly married and had children. His life is described elsewhere.

Richard Thomas Pinson was the second son of Archibald Frederick Pinson by his wife, Rosanna (née Pettit). He was born into a family of six boys and four girls that lived in Burwood New South Wales. All but one of the children (Stanley Roy Pinson) married and four of the boys had families of their own.

Richard Thomas Pinson married May Eliza Justina Pipe, in Redfern in 1912 and they had two sons shortly thereafter; Richard Taylor Pinson was born in Rozelle (Balmain) in November 1912 and his younger brother Stanley Mervyn arrived in Leichhardt in New South Wales the following year. The Postal Directories tell us that the family was living on “Cecily Street” in Leichhardt in 1914. Richard Taylor Pinson’s baptism was recorded in the records of “St. Thomas Anglican Church” in Rozelle; however, he was probably baptized at home as the entry shows that he was “in extremis”. He must have died shortly thereafter (Sydney, Australia Anglican Parish Registers: 1814-2011: Ancestry.com)

The Electoral Rolls show that Richard Thomas became a “tram conductor” and that he was living with his wife on “Birkley Road” in Manly, New South Wales by 1930. Their son, Stanley Mervyn came of age around 1934 and in 1936 he shows up as a “tram conductor” who was still living with his parents. He must have moved out the following year, as the 1937 rolls show him living on “Francis Street”.  Richard Thomas and May Eliza lived on “Birkley Road” throughout the “Second World War” and they were still there when Richard Thomas Pinson “late of the Manly Omnibus Depot” died on 30th December 1945. His funeral arrangements were reported in the press on New Year’s Day (Sydney Morning Herald: Tuesday 1st January 1946).

May Eliza stayed on in “Birkley Street”. According to the Electoral rolls, she was there by herself in 1949; however, her son, Stanley Mervyn and her daughter Shirley Pinson seem to have joined her by 1954. Stanley was a “lines-man” – presumably for a telegraph company. May Eliza died the following year and she was buried at “St. Matthew Anglican Church” in Manley on 5th August 1955.

Stanley Mervyn married Olive M. Crowe in Manly in 1934 and she was his “next of kin” when he volunteered to serve in the “Australian Imperial Force” during the “Second World War”. He joined up in Paddington [Australia, World War II Military Records: 1939 – 1945]. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last out the war. They were divorced in 1949 (Divorce and Matrimonial Cause Case Papers: NRS-13495-20-92-3881). An on-line tree by Ashley Cranston shows that Stanley died in 1954, which must have been shortly after he joining his mother on “Birkely Road.”

One of Stanley’s sisters, Hazel May Pinson married Vincent Henry Smith in 1940; however, the other, Shirley was a “shop assistant” living on “Quinton Road” in Manly as late as 1963.  The on-line tree referred to above suggests that she married a Welshman, Edward John Festin Thomas in 1967; however, I have yet to find the record.

James William Pinson was the eldest son of Archibald Frederick Pinson by his first wife, Rosanna (née Pettit). He was born in Burwood in Sydney and was brought up in a household that included six boys and four girls, all but one of whom survived childhood and eventually married. His father was a “butcher”. James’s parent’s relationship deteriorated in the early 1900s; however, their divorce did not come through until 1927. By then, James and all but two of his siblings (Rose and Thomas Henry Pinson) had married and left home.

James was a “tram guard” when he married Minnie Calder in St. Thomas Parish, Rozelle (Balmain) in 1910. Minnie was underage at the time and her mother gave her consent to the marriage as her father had already died. James and Minnie had six children over the next fifteen years, three boys and three girls . The couple were living on “Chard Road” in Greendale when their first child James George Pinson arrived in 1913.

James enlisted for service in the “Australian Imperial Force” in 1915 and his “Attestation” papers tell us that he was 5 feet 3 ½ inches tall, weighed 117 pounds and had a chest measurement of 34 ½ inches. He had a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. He was a “box maker” who belonged to the Church of England. Private James Pinson left his wife Minnie and their three children at home on “Western Road” in Balmain when he went off to war.

Private James Pinson [#3194] joined the “7th Reinforcements, 19th Battalion” in August 1915 and was shipped out to Tel El Kebir in Egypt where the Australians were rebuilding their army after the damage inflicted by the Gallipoli Campaign. He was transferred to the “4th Battalion” and sent to fight on the Western Front. His unit disembarked in Marseilles in March 1916. While in France, he suffered intermittent bouts of sickness (laryngitis, ear infections, rheumatism etc.) and seems to have spent an inordinate amount of time in one hospital or another, or in transit between them. He was; however, at the front from 26th August to 8th November 1916 so did see action. The “Imperial Force” appears to have given up on him after a severe bout of laryngitis morphed into tuberculosis at the end of 1916. He was shipped to England in May 1917 and returned to Australia on H.M.A.T. “Ulysses” in September 1917. He arrived home in November and was discharged from the forces as medically unfit in May 1918.

James and Minnie added another three children after his return. The Electoral Rolls show that he went back to being a “box maker,” and that the family had moved to “Augusta Street”, in Mortlake by 1930. Their son James George Pinson was of age by then and he shows up at the same address as a “labourer” in 1934.  Leslie Andrew Pinson joined them in the register a couple of years later. He was a “duco sprayer.” Duco was a type of thick paint.  Both sons served in the “Armed Forces” during the “Second World War”

James George Pinson married in Hazel Doreen Thompson in 1939 and Leslie Andrew Pinson married Sylvia Pearl Hurst in 1946. They had both set up on their own by 1949. James and Minnie’s daughters Gwendoline Peace and Joyce Violet were living with their parents in 1943; however, they too had married and left home by 1949. James and Minnie’s youngest son Oliver David Pinson also served in the “Australian Armed Forces” during the war. He married Gweneth Beattie. I do not know when, but it must have been either in 1949, or earlier. The lives of the three boys are discussed elsewhere.

James William died in Concord, in Sydney in January 1950, so Minnie (née Calder) was living on her own on four years later. She had moved to “Keira Road” in Chullora in Bankstown by 1958 and she could still be found there in 1977. She died sometime after that. Exactly when, I do not know.
