John Ernest Pinson

Vital Statistics

John Ernest Pinson: 1889 – 1960: GRO1914 (Iron Dresser, Sydney, New South Wales)

Marion Brown: xxxx – 1965
Married: 1911: Burwood, New South Wales, Australia

Children by Marion Brown:

Ernest Henry Pinson: 1912 – 1990 (Married Vera Mabel Hancock, Auburn, New South Wales, Australia, 1939)

Family Branch: Bristol
PinsentID: GRO1914

John Ernest was the second son of John Pinson by his wife Ellen (née Robinson). He was the son of a “plumber” who bought out his partner and established his own business in Balmain in 1888 – the year that John was born (Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser, Saturday 23rd June 1888). His father also made galvanized iron tanks and he quoted prices for tanks up to 1,000 (imperial) gallons in an advertisement placed in the same newspaper the following month (Saturday 14th July 1888). They were probably for water; however, they could have been for gas John Pinson “senior” was on a list of accredited “gasfitters” published by the “Australian Gas Light Company” in August 1888 (Sydney Morning Herald: Saturday 18th August 1888). Gas lighting was coming into fashion around then.

John Ernest grew up in Balmain with two brothers and six sisters who reached maturity. All but two, Ethel Esther (who drowned in 1907) and William John (who served in the “First World War”, was wounded and may have suffered from “shell shock”) married.

John “senior” was a respectable businessman who valued his reputation, so he inserted the following notice in the local newspaper in 1903: “The John Pinson, proceeded against in the Balmain Police Court, on Wednesday, the 30th September, for damaging property is not in any way connected with my son, John: John Pinson, 48 Foucart Street, Rozelle” (Balmain Observer and Western suburbs Advertiser: Saturday 10th October 1903). Who the other “John Pinson” was, I am not sure. It is; however, worth noting that there were other unrelated Pinson families around at the time. John’s mother, Ellen Pinson owned the family home on “Foucart Street” and she bequeathed it to her husband “for as long as he lived” when she died in 1906. Thereafter, it was to be sold and the proceeds distributed equally among their children. This must have occurred in around 1920.

John Ernest Pinson was an “iron dresser” when he married Marion Brown, in Burwood, Sydney, in 1911.  He worked in a foundry, where he cleaned the extra “flash” metal off molds and metal castings. John and Marion had at least one son, Ernest Henry Pinson while living on “Underwood Road” in Homebush, in Sydney. He was born in 1912. There may have been other children that I do not know about.

John Ernest signed on as a Private (#5386) in the “Australian Imperial Force” in Homebush, New South Wales, in March 1916. He had served for three years in a territorial unit, the “Scottish Rifles,” so he was not completely new to military life. John’s attestation papers (available in the “Australian National Archive” and online) shows that he was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was 5 ft. 3 in. tall, weighed 140 lbs. and had a chest measurement of 34 in. He had a medium complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. The mole he had over his ensiform cartilage was deemed to be a potentially useful distinguishing feature. John was certified fit, swore the requisite oaths of allegiance and joined the “14th Reinforcement” for the “18th Battalion” before embarking for England in August 1916. There, he underwent a period of training before being trans-shipped to France in December 1916. Private Pinson was formally transferred to the “18th Battalion” in January 1917.

John Ernest seems to have had a constant struggle with “trench foot” (nerve and vascular damage to the feet caused by prolonged immersion in cold water) and he was in and out of hospital throughout 1917. The Battalion went on leave in England in January 1918 but returned to France a month later. John received a gunshot wound to his left shoulder in May and was shipped back to England to recover and convalesce. He was mentioned in the “Casualty List” published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Thursday 20th June 1918. When he recovered, he was sent back his unit; however the war was almost over by then. The Armistice was signed in November 1918.

John attended a course designed to assist soldiers transition back to civilian life in April 1919, while he was still on the Continent. He was then returned to England to await trans-shipment back to Australia. Private Pinson returned on the “S.S. Mitliades” which left Plymouth in on 19th June 1919 and arrived back in Sydney in August. He was formally discharged from the Army the following month. In 1920, John received the certificate for the course he had attended at the “Universite du Travail” in Charleroi in Belgium. How valuable he found the course, given that he had returned to his original trade as an “iron dresser”, I do not know. His service earned him the “1914/15 Star Medal”, the “British War Medal” and the “Victory Medal” – and very sore feet.

After John’s death in 1960, John’s widow’s lawyer wrote to the “Central Army Records Office” seeking confirmation that John had, in fact, been in the army when he signed his last will and testament on 18th August 1916. Apparently there was nothing more recent and the probate court needed confirmation of its legitimacy.

The Electoral Rolls show that John Ernest and Marion settled in “Livingstone Road” in Lidcombe in Sydney sometime after the war. The Electoral Rolls show that he was still an “iron dresser” and she was still assigned to “home duties” as late as 1930. Their son, Ernest Henry Pinson came of age the following year and he later shows up in the rolls as an “ice-vendor”.

Ernest Henry Pinson married Vera Mabel Hancock, the daughter of a “night-watchman” in 1939 and the two of them lived with his parent on “Livingstone Road”, until John’s death in 1960.  Despite the previously mentioned concerns, his will was probated (New South Wales Archives: On-line Search: Deceased Estates Index: 1880 – 1923: NRS-13660-40-16417-Series 4_520137: John Ernest Pinson: Date of Death 10th October 1960: Granted on 2nd March 1961).

John Ernest’s widow, Marion stayed on at “#17 Livingstone Road”. She was there in 1963 and she died there in 1965 (New South Wales Archives: On-line Search: Deceased Estates Index: 1880 – 1923: NRS-13660-47-70-Series 4_600491: Marian Pinson: Date of death 12th May 1965: Granted on 21st October 1965). Her son, Ernest Henry and his wife, Vera Mabel, were living next door, at “#16 Livingstone Road”. According to the Electoral Rolls, they were still there in 1980. Ernest and Vera had at least two children, who are probably alive today. Ernest died in August 1990 (Australia and New Zealand, Rootsweb Death Index: 1813 – 2003).

Leslie Walter Pinson

Leslie Walter Pinson: 1881 – 1954 GRO1911 (Plumber, Annandale, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia)

Married: 1905: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

John William Pinson: 1912 – xxxx (Married Mona Barbara Vale, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1940)

Family Branch: Bristol
PinsentID: GRO1911

Leslie Walter Pinson was the eldest son of John Pinson by his wife, Ellen (née Robinson). He grew up in Sydney with six sisters and two brothers, one of whom (John Ernest Pinson) also married and had children. The other (William John Pinson) managed to live a full life but (to the best of my knowledge) never married. Leslie’s father was a “plumber” and “gasfitter” who moved around in the Sydney area for a few years and eventually settling down on “Foucart Street” in Rozelle (Balmain).

Leslie Walter became a “plumber,” like his father. He married Myra Crozier in Sydney in 1905 and they had at least two sons – a second Leslie Walter Pinson later the same year, and a John William Pinson in 1912. I am not aware of any other children.

Leslie’s mother Ellen (née Robinson) died in June 1906 and “Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Pinson” notified their friends of the funeral arrangements (Sydney Morning Herald: Monday 4th June 1906). She had owned the family home in “Foucart Street” and she left it to her husband on the understanding that it be sold after his death, and the proceeds would be divided equally among their children, who she named as: “Isabella Elizabeth Pinson, now Wagstaff; Ethel Esther Pinson, Leslie Walter Pinson, Nellie Mabel Pinson, Edith May Pinson, John Ernest Pinson, William John Pinson, Daisy Bell Pinson and Ivy Irene Pinson:” (New South Wales Will Books: 1800-1952: Findmypast). A year later, Leslie and his wife placed a letter of remembrance of his mother’s passing in their local paper (Sydney Morning Herald: Saturday 1st June 1907).

Sadly, Leslie’s sister Ethel died – either accidentally or through suicide – on the first anniversary of her mother’s death.  She had been to visit “her brother” (presumably Leslie) with another brother (William John Pinson) and he noticed that she had gone missing after they returned home. At the inquest, William deposed that she had been behaving “peculiarly” while they were out, and he had gone looking for her after she went missing. However, he had to give up at nightfall. The following morning he found her drowned, face down, on the bench at Rozelle Bay. The Coroner decided that she died through drowning but said that there was no way to determine how she had come to be in the water.

Leslie and Myra were living on “Wigram Road” in Annandale in Sydney in 1913 (New South Wales Electoral Rolls). However, they probably moved to “St. Elmo” on “Harrow Road” in Stanmore not long after, as Myra’s brother (?) Albert Edward Crozier gave a “Mrs. Pinson” at that address as his next of kin when he signed up for service in the Armed Forces. Leslie Pinson’s father, John Pinson died in 1919. The “Foucart Street” house was presumably sold in accordance with his late wife Ellen’s will, and the proceeds dispersed among the family.

Leslie’s son Leslie Walter Pinson (“junior”) took the “N.M.R.A. Mechanics’ Examination” when 21 years old in 1927 and the answers he gave were thought to be good enough to warrant publishing for the edification of motor-car owners and the general public. The topics they covered included: “The Crank Pin, …  Carburettor Adjustment, … the cause of Blue Smoke in Exhaust,  … reasons for Engine Overheating and … what to do about a choked muffler (Evening News: Thursday 14th April 1927).

On Wednesday 23rd November1932, the Sydney Morning Herald carried the following announcement: “NOTICE OF DISSOLUTION OF PARTNERSHIP: Pursuant to the Partnership Act. 1892. Notice is hereby given that the Partnership heretofore subsisting between the undersigned, EDWARD HENRY BARNES and LESLIE WALTER PINSON, carrying on business as Plumbers at Number 28 Pacific Highway (late Lane Cove-road), North Sydney, under the name of “Barnes and Pinson,” has been DISSOLVED by mutual consent as from the eighteenth day of November, 1932: All debts due to the said late firm will be received by Leslie Walter Pinson at Number 28 Pacific High- way, North Sydney, aforesaid. Dated this twenty-first day of November, 1932, (Signed) LESLIE W. PINSON”. It is not clear whether the Leslie W. Pinson here referred to is Leslie “senior” who was buying out a partner towards the end of his career or his son Leslie “junior” who was buying out of a partnership to move on in his career. It was probably the former. It is worth noting that Leslie “junior” married Iris Mary Garrick in Chatswood in 1932. I do not know if they had children or not. If they did, they would likely be alive today.

The Electoral Rolls show that Leslie “senior” was a “master plumber” by 1936. He lived at “6 Forsyth Street”, Chatswood with his wife Myra (née Crozier), their son, Leslie Walter Pinson, who was a “fitter” and his wife, Iris Mary (née Garrick), and also with his younger son, John William who was another “plumber”. L. W. Pinson had a plumbing business at “214 Pacific Highway” and lived with his family on “Forsyth Street” during the “Second World War” (Telephone Directories (1940 – 1942))

Leslie Walter “junior” must have been away for much of this time as he signed up and was an Officer in “Royal Australian Air Force” (Australia, World War II, Military Service Records, 1939 – 1945: Ancestry.com). His father, Leslie Pinson “senior,” would have been in his seventies and, presumably, retired by 1954. The Electoral Rolls show that he lived on “Hawthorne Avenue” that year with his wife Myra, and his younger son John William and his wife, Mona Barbara (neé Vale). Leslie Walter “senior” died in 1954 and his wife Myra died a couple of years later, in 1956.

The 1958 Electoral Rolls tell us that Leslie Walter “junior” was living at “87 Hawthorne Avenue” with his wife, Iris Mary and at least one son who had come of age and was a “draftsman”. The household also included Leslie’s brother John William Pinson who was a “teacher” and his wife, Mona Barbara – who helped out with the “household duties.” Leslie and Iris had moved to “Edgar Street” in Marsfield by 1977, and that is where she died. Leslie Walter Pinson “junior” died a decade later (1987) in Port Macquarie New South Wales. He was buried in the “Innes Garden Memorial Park”

Robert Peter Derek Pinsent was the second son of John Thomas Pinsent by his wife Annie Violet (née Keenor). He had an elder brother, Hilary, who was born in Bideford in 1924. His father, who was an“electrician” by trade, moved around to find work and went up to London shortly after he was born – in Torquay in 1926. Sadly, his parents’ marriage fell apart shortly afterwards and Annie, who had stayed on in Torquay to look after the children, felt obliged to apply to the Magistrates for a maintenance order in 1928 (Wednesday Morning News: Tuesday 24th July 1928). They said they hoped that the couple would get back together again; however there is no indication that they ever did.

When the England and Wales Register was compiled in 1939, Annie was a “daily cook” living on Windemere Road in Torquay with her younger son, Robert. He was around thirteen years old and still in school. The “One other” person listed was redacted. This was probably her other son, Hilary.

The Electoral rolls show that Annie Violet moved up to London after the war and was living with her two sons at #28 Shakespeare Avenue in the borough of Southall, Hayes in 1947. They both married the following year. Hilary married Sheila Long and later emigrated to Canada.

Robert, meanwhile, married Eileen Florence Stenings in the parish Church at Hayes, in Middlesex in December 1948. Sadly, she died the following year and Robert, who was by then a “toolmaker,” returned home to live with his mother. He evidently thought about marriage again in 1953 and his engagement to Lena McCarthy was announced in the local paper; however, I am not sure that anything came of it (Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette: Friday 27th November 1953). He seems to have remained single, and he was still living with his mother when he actually remarried in 1956.

Robert was said to be a “mechanical engineer” when he married Margaret Iris Tweddle in Uxbridge in March 1956. However, he was listed as a “lathe turner” when he registered the births of his two sons in 1955 (?) and 1960. Margaret had been married previously and had gone by the name of Margaret Iris Lea. Robert and Margaret had their two sons while they were living in Hillingdon (Greater London) in 1955 or 1956 and 1960. Interestingly the “Civil Registry Birth Index” has her elder son listed twice! I do not know why. The Electoral Register shows that the family was living on Fore Street in Hillingdon in 1965. However, it had moved to “Farmlands”, in Pinner, in Middlesex by 1972 (British Telephone Books: 1880-1984) and that seems to have been their home until the early 2000s. Robert, Margaret and Iris were still living in Pinner in 2003 (U.K. Electoral Register). Robert died there in 2005. Margaret, meanwhile, died in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in 2018.

Robert and Margaret’s sons are, doubtless, still alive. I do not know if they married or had children.
