Charles Hubert Pinsent was the younger of William Abraham Pinsent’s sons by his wife Louisa (née Bristow). He was born in Plymouth in 1907 and grew up with an elder brother and a younger sister. His father was a Coast Guard Officer, and the family must have moved around and lived in several coast-guard stations over the years. Charles’s parents eventually retired to Brighton in Sussex and he lived with them while he was a student in the early 1930s (Electoral Rolls: Ancestry.com)

Charles studied law and then moved to Camberwell, in Southwark, south of the Thames, in the mid 1930s. The Electoral Registers show that he was living on Carver Street, in Camberwell by 1936. He completed his articles and was an “assistant solicitor” when called to testify in a dispute over a lease that his firm had arranged in 1939. The issue, in part, revolved around a refrigerator that the plaintiff felt had been misrepresented – as it ran on alternating current (A.C.) rather than the direct current (D.C.) then in use in the district (South Western Star: Friday 11th November 1938). The following year, on 6th February 1940, he could be found chairing a meeting at Chiswell House on Finsbury Pavement. The firm of “W. Jay & Son” was being dissolved and the meeting was to arrange for a change of liquidator (London Gazette: 9th May, 1940).

Charles married Margaret Evelyn Pettifer in St. Paul’s Parish Church in Herne Hill, in London in June 1940. Margaret had been a “typist” living with her widowed mother on Carver Road when the 1939 Wartime Register was taken the previous year. This was just a few houses down from where Charles had had his lodgings. They had two sons, one during and one shortly after the “Second World War”. Charles does not seem to have served in the armed forces. His first child was born at his grandmother’s house on Carver Street.

Charles and Margaret lived with Margaret’s parents, Kenneth R. and Florence M. Pettifer at #31 Carver Street after the war and became well established members of the local community. Mr. C. H. Pinsent “of #31 Carver Street” was treaurer of the committee responsible for building the church hall in Herne Hill in 1958 (South London Observer: Thursday 5th October 1958). then seem to have had the house to them selves until 1959. At that point, Charles and Margaret rejoined his in-laws at #59 Half Moon Lane, in London E. 24 (London Electoral Registers: Ancestry.com). Their elder son came of age around 1963 and he also shows up in the register.

After the war, Charles either joined or helped establish the law firm of “Parker, Sloan and Pinsent” of 168 Temple Chambers, Temple Avenue, London, E.C. 4.  It dealt with the usual range of legal issues and also some more niche items – including “name change.” The firm helped Iris Florence Doyle of Kingston upon Thames in Surrey formally abandoned the surname of “Lovell” in January 1950 (London Gazette: 13th January 1950), and Selwyn Thorpe Cholmeley Harrison to become Selwyn Thorpe Cholmeley Harrison-Wallace in 1952 (London Gazette: 9th December 1952). I am sure they both had their reasons.

The firm routinely handled estate and probate issues: for instance, it helped process the will of Leonie Marie Lee of Mansfield Road, Selston in Nottinghamshire, in November 1950 (London Gazette: 17th November 1950). Probate, and to a lesser extent conveyancing (Bristol Evening Post: Wednesday 12th September 1951) were steady sources of business throughout the 1950s and 1960s. “Parker Sloan and Pinsent” occasionaly helped wind up Corporate Entities – such as “S. Rosenbaum Ltd.” in 1953 (London Gazette: 7th August 1953). “Parker Sloan and Pinsent” also handled some “H.M. Land Registry Office” matters – particularly those relating to the replacement of lost Certificates (London Gazette: 27th November 1953).

As an interesting one-off, the firm handled the amalgamation of the “Globe” and the “Leek and Westbourne” Building Societies in November 1967. As with most of their work, notices indicating that “anyone wishing to be heard …” should contact the principle company or “Parker, Sloan and Pinsent” were placed in local newspapers. Interestingly, in this particular case, the company’s address was given as “55 Eden Street, Kingston on Thames, Surrey”, not “169 Temple Chamber, Temple Avenue, London” (London Gazette: 7th November 1967).

In 1968, Charles was asked to handle the probate of Roy Albion Snell of “Moor Close in Bovey Tracey”. Presumably he was aware that his family had originally come from there (London Gazette: 25th January 1968).

Charles and Margaret left London and moved to Porthallow, St. Keverne, near the Lizard on the southern tip of Cornwall sometime in the late 1960s. Coincidentally, or quite possibly otherwise, it was close to where Charles’s father William Abraham West had been station when the 1911 Census was taken. They may well have moved there because of Margaret’s health. She died in Cornwall in the summer of 1969.

Charles moved up to Ludlow in Herefordshire (on the Welsh border) in 1972. This was probably so that he could be close to one of his two sons. Sadly, this son, Richard Hugh Pinsent, died there in 2003. Charles then moved to Ledbury where he lived with Elsie Morgan for several years before he died, in September 2009. His death was registered in Birmingham.

Mr. Sloan, one of the partners in the firm of “Parker, Sloan and Pinsent” seems to have retired at the end of 1968 and the firm was reconstituted as “Parker, Fogg and Pinsent” in January of the following year. How active Charles Hubert was, I am not sure. However, the firm kept his name and the same style of practice (name-change, probate and corporate wind-up etc.) out of the same set of offices at “#169 Temple Chambers, Temple Avenue, E.C.4” (London Gazette: 21st January 1969) throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s.

The company may have even have established a subsidiary in Hornchurch, in Essex in the late 1970s. In July 1979, that office handled the paperwork when Graham James Powell of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex formally changed his name to Alwyn James Bowman-Powell (London Gazette: 17th & 23rd July 1979). Not content with that, he changed it again – to Alwyn Bowman Powell in March 1982 (London Gazette: 29th March 1982)!

One of the last issues dealt with by the partnership seems to have concerned the probate of Joseph Lionel Pettifer of Herne Hill, in London, a “wholesale meat trader”.  Presumably Joseph was one of Margaret Evelyn Pettifer’s relations (London Gazette: 31st July 1984).

Charles’s younger son may well still be alive. He married in 1969 and had at least two children, a son and a daughter in the 1970s. The family is, presumably, still going strong.
