Smethwick Local Board Election: A Protest: The election of four members to serve on the Smethwick Local Board took place yesterday. The nomination of Mr. G. E. Thompson was objected to by Mr. J. Jones, on the ground that it was deposited too late, and in the wrong place. The returning officer held that the objection was sustained and refused an appeal of Mr. Pincent to return only three candidates, leaving a vacancy for the fourth to be filled by the Local Board. Mr. Pinsent protested against the officer’s decisions. The result was declared at about nine o’clock. The first three were elected with Mr. Vaughan: W. Harley, 2,107; J. Nowey, 2077; T. Howell, 1,895; G. E. Thompson 1,529 (disqualified); W. W. Vaughan, 1.434; C. Earle 736; B. Simpson, 731; W. Mackey, 688; C. Dudley, 431; C. Summerton, 392.
