Robert Peter Derek Pinsent was the second son of John Thomas Pinsent by his wife Annie Violet (née Keenor). He had an elder brother, Hilary, who was born in Bideford in 1924. His father, who was an“electrician” by trade, moved around to find work and went up to London shortly after he was born – in Torquay in 1926. Sadly, his parents’ marriage fell apart shortly afterwards and Annie, who had stayed on in Torquay to look after the children, felt obliged to apply to the Magistrates for a maintenance order in 1928 (Wednesday Morning News: Tuesday 24th July 1928). They said they hoped that the couple would get back together again; however there is no indication that they ever did.

When the England and Wales Register was compiled in 1939, Annie was a “daily cook” living on Windemere Road in Torquay with her younger son, Robert. He was around thirteen years old and still in school. The “One other” person listed was redacted. This was probably her other son, Hilary.

The Electoral rolls show that Annie Violet moved up to London after the war and was living with her two sons at #28 Shakespeare Avenue in the borough of Southall, Hayes in 1947. They both married the following year. Hilary married Sheila Long and later emigrated to Canada.

Robert, meanwhile, married Eileen Florence Stenings in the parish Church at Hayes, in Middlesex in December 1948. Sadly, she died the following year and Robert, who was by then a “toolmaker,” returned home to live with his mother. He evidently thought about marriage again in 1953 and his engagement to Lena McCarthy was announced in the local paper; however, I am not sure that anything came of it (Uxbridge & W. Drayton Gazette: Friday 27th November 1953). He seems to have remained single, and he was still living with his mother when he actually remarried in 1956.

Robert was said to be a “mechanical engineer” when he married Margaret Iris Tweddle in Uxbridge in March 1956. However, he was listed as a “lathe turner” when he registered the births of his two sons in 1955 (?) and 1960. Margaret had been married previously and had gone by the name of Margaret Iris Lea. Robert and Margaret had their two sons while they were living in Hillingdon (Greater London) in 1955 or 1956 and 1960. Interestingly the “Civil Registry Birth Index” has her elder son listed twice! I do not know why. The Electoral Register shows that the family was living on Fore Street in Hillingdon in 1965. However, it had moved to “Farmlands”, in Pinner, in Middlesex by 1972 (British Telephone Books: 1880-1984) and that seems to have been their home until the early 2000s. Robert, Margaret and Iris were still living in Pinner in 2003 (U.K. Electoral Register). Robert died there in 2005. Margaret, meanwhile, died in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, in 2018.

Robert and Margaret’s sons are, doubtless, still alive. I do not know if they married or had children.
