Frederick Arthur was the youngest surviving son of Joseph Pinson by his wife Elizabeth (née Snell). He was born in Sydney and grew up on “Harris Street” in Pyrmont, a coastal subdivision of down-town Sydney. He had three brothers (William James Pinson, Richard Thomas Pinson and John Pinson) whose lives are discussed elsewhere, as well as three surviving sisters (Louisa Pinson, Sarah Pinson and Hannah Amelia Pinson).

Frederick Arthur first came to public attention when he was brought before the “Central Police Court” in Sydney with two other boys (John Smith and Frederick Mutton) charged with having assaulted Ann Gilvery outside the Land’s End public house in Pyrmont in August 1873. Ann deposed that the three of them were among a group of boys who kicked her, pushed her about, called her names and threw muck at her as she was leaving the premises. She denied being drunk, saying that she had only had half a pint of ale and she was taking a pint home with her. She said she was certain the three boys were there. However, a witness testified that although he had seen John Smith kick her, he could not remember seeing Frederick Pinson or Frederick Mutton. Two other witnesses testified that neither could have been there at the time and they were discharged. John smith, on the other hand, was fined 6s (Sydney Morning Herald: Thursday 21st August 1873).

Frederick married Elizabeth Macken in Paddington, Sydney, in 1878 and they appear to have had a son, also named Frederick A. Pinson, the following year. As far as I know, he was their only child.

When Frederick “senr.’s” mother and father died, in 1880 and 1881 respectively, he joined his brothers and sisters in inserting a notice regarding the funeral arrangements in the Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney Morning Herald: Tuesday 27th April 1880 and Tuesday 30th August 1881). He later notified his friends regarding the deaths of his elder brothers William James Pinson in 1899 (Sydney Morning Herald: Tuesday 19th September 1899), and Richard Thomas Pinson in 1913 (Sydney Morning Herald: Saturday 11th January 1913). It was a time-honoured convention that often resulted in multiple notifications of the same event.

Frederick may have been apprenticed to a “hatter.” Certainly, the Electoral Rolls for Sydney refer to a Frederick Arthur Pinson “hatter” living on “Canterbury Road” in Belmore in 1903-4, and to a Frederick Pinson “hatter” on “Aylesbury Street”, in Newton, Sydney, in 1913. Sadly, Frederick Arthur died at Ryde in Sydney in 1914.

I do not know what happened to his widow, Elizabeth (néMacken). Similarly, I do not know very much about their son, Frederick A. Pinson. However, seems to have been admitted to the “Liverpool Asylum for the Infirm and Destitute” for a few days suffering from “rheum” (probably a bad cold or flu) for a few days in October 1900. He recovered and discharged himself approximately ten days later (New South Wales Hospital and Asylum Records: 1840 – 1913: Ancestry.com).

Frederick A. (“jnr.” ?) became a “carpenter”. The New South Wales Electoral Rolls (Ancestry.com) show that he lived in Narellan in 1935 and died there, intestate, on 10th October 1940. The Public Trustee filed an election to administer his Estate “subject to the usual enemy conditions” – what ever that meant (New South Wales Will Books: 1800 – 1952: (Findmypast). If Frederick A. Pinson married and had children, I am not aware of it. There is a chance that any children he had are alive today.
