East and South Devon Advertiser: Saturday 9th May 1885

The Church restoration Question at Bovey Tracey: the poll demanded by the vicar (the results of which was made known last week) was officially declared on Saturday, when an adjourned vestry meeting was held. The attendance of the parishioners was not large … among those present were … includes … H. Pinsent … (long discussion) … Mr. Pinsent said he did not understand there was to have been any canvassing but regretted to say he had been canvassed for his vote by two or three. — Mr. Westwood challenged him to name the party. He knew had not done so. Mr. Pinsent declined to give the information asked. Mr. Baker said one person had mentioned that two oz. of “baccy” had been offered to him to vote for the vicar. Mr. Sparks denied any attempt having been made to bribe anyone in the Vicars party. The Vicar treated the matter as a joke. Mr. Sparks accused young Mr. Robinson of using great deal of party spirit, and when the voting was proceeding, he cried out from the top of the steps “down with the Church and Popery.”—The Vicar remarked that the discussion had continued quite long enough and, having again thanked them for their support, left the chair.
