Crazy and Disgusting: To the Editor of the “Daily Express”: Sir, – The slow torture method adopted by the society – ten smacks, a pause and talking to then more smacks and resembles nothing so much as a cat with a mouse. It reminds me also of the slavedriver who, while flogging a slave, left off at intervals to preach till the poor wretch called out “Oh, masa, either flogs or preached.” As though there was any chance of the unfortunate little victim of this cruel process taking any notice of the preachment. The good or bad behaviour of children depends almost entirely upon the influence of those who have charge of them. Those who think only of the upside of the latter whip them; deceit and lies are usually the results, and love and conscience disappear. On the other hand, the best brought up children are seldom whipped, and then not severely enough to cause lasting resentment. Emily Pinsent:
