Mr. W. S. Pinsent presided at a large meeting of inhabitants of Newton Abbot to consider and decide upon the best method of celebrating and commemorating the Queen’s record reign. On the motion of Mr. W. J. Watts, junr., seconded by Mr. J. Olver, it was decided that the day of the Diamond Jubilee be kept as a general holiday and that a separate subscription list be opened to provide funds. Mr. W. H. Lauder having withdrawn his motion to establish baths, Dr. Grimbly’s suggestion of the raising of a fund for the endowment of the new hospital was agreed to.
