Totnes Weekly Times: Saturday 16th February 1895

Newton Abbot: Skating has been in full swing on the ice at Stover for a fortnight. On Saturday a hockey match was played between Newton Residents v. Rest of the County, and after a most exciting match resulted in a win for Newton by six goals to two. Mr. Kay scored three goals and Mr. W. Taverner, Mr. J. Taverner and Mr. H. Pinsent (sic) one each for the winners. Mr. Clarke scored for the county. The trade at present in Newton is very quiet indeed, and one of the oldest inhabitants said that it is many years since such severe weather and hard times have been experienced. During the past three weeks a number of working men have been out of employment, and the distress amongst some of the families is heart aching.
