Madras Weekly Mail: Wednesday 5th March 1890

The Madras Harbour Trust Board: The porterage contract with Messrs. P. Ramanjaloo Naidu and Sons terminates today … (continues) … The coolies employed on the import porterage will be paid daily by the Harbour Trust Board, the men being in charge of a head cooly or maistry, one Mudden Singh, who will draw a monthly salary of Rs. 30. Mr. C. Pinsent, Secretary, on Wednesday caused a circular signed by himself to be published assuring the coolies that they will be paid punctually, and will be mulcted in the wages as some of them apprehended. The new scheme which has met with the approval of the Harbour Trust Board, though not formally sanctioned by Government, will be a tentative measure for six months, when it will be amended, or continued, or abolished as the experience of six months working may render desirable.
