James Hinks & Son: Free Trade and Old Age Pensions: The twelfth ordinary general meeting of the shareholders of James Hinks and Son was held at the works, Great Hampton Street, Birmingham on Monday. Mr. Joseph Hinks, presiding: … (directors’ report – discussion of drop in metal prices, Free trade and difficulties competing with cheap imports from America and Germany) … Mr. Ross Pinsent having seconded the proposition, it was carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. Ross Pinsent, seconded by Mr. Harry Hinks and supported by Mr. Ash, the Chairman was unanimously re-elected as Director. Messrs. Sharp, Parsons and Co. were re-elected auditors for the ensuing year. In responding to a vote of thanks, the Chairman said if they were not able to pay any more dividends it was satisfactory to know there were old-age pensions staring them in the face (laughter). They would have 3s a week to spend on rates, clothing, and food, and he had it on reliable authority that they could spend the balance in luxuries (laughter). …
