Thefts by a Widow: Harriet Steel Smith, 46, widow, A1, Britannia Street, was charged with stealing from inside the shop, No. 1 Southgate Street, on the 5th inst., a shirt, the property of Ellen Mitchell, value 3s 6d – a second case charged prisoner with stealing a pair of boots on the 5th inst., value 4s 11d, the property of George Hy. Pinsent. Prisoner admitted stealing the skirt, but said she had no knowledge of having stolen the boots, which were found on her when being searched. There were five previous convictions against the prisoner, who was sent to gaol for two months with hard labour.
