Gunmakers Summoned: On Tuesday, at the Birmingham Police Court, Edward Anson, gunmaker, carrying on business in Stealhouse Lane as E. Anson and Co., was summoned at the instance of the Guardians of the Birmingham Proof House for selling a Belgian rifle with is name on it and not having it marked with an English Proof House Mark. … (continues) … A second case of a similar character was then taken. The defendants, being Messrs. James and Reynolds, dealers in sporting guns, 9, Leander Road, Thornton Heath London. … Henry Edward Carrad, manager of the Remington Typewriter Co., gave evidence as to purchasing the rifle, but cross examined by Mr. F. E. Smith (Pinsent and Co.) who defended, admitted that his statement that he wanted the rifle for South Africa was pure imagination. He also agreed that he really had the gun on approval. Mr. Smith argued that this being so, there was no case against his clients, but ultimately withdrew his objection and the Acting Stipendiary dismissed the case on payment of costs.
